The Marketing Off-Ramp

I spent years on the technical side of digital marketing. Then I moved into tech without going back to school.

I set up campaigns. I migrated websites. I built email and CRM automations, and I built the reports that everyone argued about on Monday morning.

At some point I started wondering whether the problem was my job or the whole field.

Working that out took me a lot longer than it should have. What I eventually found was that the work I had already been doing had different names outside marketing, and those names were being hired for. That did not require a second degree or student debt. I closed the gaps I actually had with a few hundred dollars of self-study, at home, on my own time.

That is why this exists. I am sharing how the move happened, for people with a marketing operations or martech background who are wondering the same thing I was.

Start with the checklist

I wrote down the nine questions I wish someone had handed me back then. It takes about ten minutes and it works better with a pen than on a screen.

It sorts out which kind of problem you have. Whether a career pivot is worth thinking about, or whether you are in a bad job and what you need is a different one.
